Why Adopt a School?
If we want hospitality to thrive and develop we have to convince children at an early age that our industry is fun and interesting. If like me, you have been to a class full of 5 year old children and you ask them "Who wants to be a chef?", they will all put their hand up. Therefore it is up to us to go regularly to schools and be involved, to make sure they will feel the same way 10 years later. We may lose a few along the way, but not all of them.
What the school is going to expect from you
A few times a year, you and your staff will be invited to talk to students and teachers and demonstrate your culinary skills to help keep children inspired; maybe give some pointers to the tuck shop convener also. You may choose to help out for a BBQ or special event, or you may choose to sponsor your own event and be involved with the upkeep of the website. You can choose to be involved with Primary or High Schools, and it’s a good idea to choose a school that is close to your business to save on travel time.
What will you gain
- Schools are a huge market (we all went to school); some of the parents and teachers may already be your customers and they will promote you at no cost.
- You will feel good about putting back in the community, what we take for granted.
- You will inspire young people to work in the hospitality industry; especially as chefs.
- You will forge a friendship with that school that will enrich your life forever.
- You will become a leader in social marketing.
- In short, you will discover a new world away from the hustle and bustle of hospitality.
